You wash your hair, you condition it, you do everything right, and somehow it still feels rough. Stiff at the ends. Dull no matter how much shine product you reach for. It tangles the second you try to brush it, and the breakage just keeps coming.
Here is the thing almost nobody tells you: it might not be your hair at all. It might be your water.
What is actually making my hair stiff and dull?
Short answer: calcium. The water coming out of your shower (and your tap, and the lake, and the pool) is full of minerals like calcium and magnesium. Those minerals cling to your strands and build up over time, forming an invisible film that makes hair feel rigid, look flat, and snap more easily.
Damaged hair gets hit the hardest. Because colour-treated, lightened, or heat-stressed hair is more porous, it actually soaks up around three times more calcium than healthy virgin hair. So the people doing the most to their hair are the ones quietly accumulating the most buildup. Cruel, I know.
This is the stuff I see in the salon all the time. A client swears their hair “just changed,” and they cannot figure out why. Nine times out of ten, it is gradual mineral buildup doing exactly what it does best: undoing your good products from the inside out.

The pre-shampoo step that changes everything
If there is one product I want you to know about, it is the Kérastase Première Concentré Décalcifiant Ultra-Réparateur. It is a pre-shampoo treatment, which means it goes on before you wash, and it does two jobs at once.

Here’s Nicole breaking down exactly how it works and why she’s obsessed with it:
First, it decalcifies. It uses an 8% concentration of pure acids (citric acid is the hero here) to dissolve and lift that calcium buildup out of the hair. Second, it repairs. Once the calcium is cleared, glycine, an amino acid, slips inside the strand and rebuilds the broken connections in your keratin, the protein your hair is actually made of.
The results Kérastase reports are genuinely impressive: up to 99% of hair’s original strength restored, 75% more shine, and 93% less breakage. Translation for real life: hair that finally feels soft and bendy again instead of stiff, with shine that does not disappear by day two.
Here is how to use it: Apply a generous amount to damp hair before you shampoo. Massage it through, leave it on for about five minutes, and do not rinse. You go straight into your shampoo on top of it.
Does it have to be paired with Première Bain?
It works best with the Première Bain Décalcifiant Réparateur, yes. The Concentré is designed to layer directly underneath it, and the two together give you the strongest decalcifying and repairing result as a system. That is the gold-standard routine I would set you up with.
That said, the Concentré is not picky. It is a pre-shampoo treatment, so it plays nicely as the first step before whatever Kérastase shampoo you already love and are loyal to. You just get the most dramatic before-and-after when the whole Première range is working together. If you want to round it out, follow your wash with the Fondant Fluidité Réparateur conditioner or the Masque Filler for an extra hit of repair.

Why does this matter even more in the summer?
Summer is calcium season, and most people have no idea.
Think about where your hair goes between June and September. The pool, where chlorine strips your hair’s natural oils and the water itself is loaded with calcium (pool calcium hardness usually runs between 200 and 400 ppm, which is a lot). The lake. The ocean, where salt water pulls moisture out of every strand. And then the cabin, where the well water or hard tap water is often far more mineral-heavy than what you are used to in the city.
So you are getting it from every direction: chlorine and salt drying your hair out, and calcium from pool, lake, and cabin water building up at the same time. That combination is exactly how a great summer turns into straw-like, dull, breaking hair by August.
A quick note that helps a lot: rinse your hair with clean water before you get in the pool or lake. Hair that is already saturated with fresh water absorbs less of the chlorine and minerals around it. Think of it like a sponge that is already full.
But the real summer move is keeping that calcium from settling in. Working the Concentré into your routine once a week through swim season is one of the simplest ways to stay ahead of the buildup instead of scrambling to fix fried hair in September.

The takeaway
If your hair feels stiff, dull, and breakage-prone no matter what you do, your water is very likely part of the story, and it only gets louder in the summer. Clearing out the calcium with a decalcifying pre-shampoo treatment like the Première Concentré, ideally paired with the Première Bain, is one of the highest-impact things you can do for hair that actually feels and looks healthy again.
Your hair has been working hard against the water this whole time. Give it a little backup.
